Child sitting on potty with mother, 5 signs of potty training. Pediatrics Mom.

Potty training is an important step — and each child has their own pace. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, successful potty training is directly linked to the child's physical, emotional, and behavioral readiness. Forcing this process too early can lead to stress, frustration, and even setbacks.

Here are 5 signs that indicate your child may be ready to begin this new phase:

  1. It stays dry for at least 2 hours during the day or after naps — which indicates that bladder control is developing.

  2. Can sit up and stand up independently from the potty or toilet, demonstrating motor maturity.

  3. It recognizes and alerts you when you need to pee or poop — even after you've already done it.

  4. Shows interest in using the toilet, observes adults or siblings and wants to imitate them.

  5. He is able to follow simple instructions and help with small tasks, such as pulling down his pants.

Remember: potty training isn't a race. Every child has their own pace — respecting that is the best way to ensure a smooth and trauma-free transition.
